5 E's (9/28/20)

Explore with Dr. Edelstein - The presentation by Dr. Edelstein was extremely interesting and informative. It really shed light on the negative impacts that climate change will have on us in the future and why it is so important to save the environment. I am excited to teach this subject to my students so that we can make the world a better place.  5E Lesson Engage- Ask the students if they have familiarity with the subject that's being presented. Allow students to make connections to things they may have done in real life. Explore- Gather any available classroom materials and create their own version of the product life cycle.  Explain- Using evidence, students will explain how removing limited resources not only decreases the amount of resources but changes the distribution of the resource on Earth.  Evaluate- Ask follow up questions, such as "what questions came up as you did this activity?" Elaborate- Reflect on the product life cycle activity and work on extensi...

The 5 E's

Engage  The main message of Neil DeGrass Tyson's talk is that science literacy gives you the power to know the validity of someone's words (the truth). The main message is that scientists are knowledgable in other fields than just science. We should be embarrassed that scientists know more about liberal arts and can speak about other subjects such as Shakespeare while English majors could probably not hold a conversation about physics.  Explore  Inquiry-based learned is used to teach students lessons by having them investigate and navigate actual scenarios and experiencing/watching through social scenarios instead of an extremely formal lesson and just reading to memorize facts.  Discovery learning is learning that is done throughout acts of discovery in order to rearrange and transform what is learned in ways that one will be able to move passed the evidence so that they develop a new, additional insight into what is already known.  Explain The 5E's are a...

Scientific Method Project Posts

Engage / Discover: I enjoyed watching the video clip about Doc Brown. He goes through a moment of realization when he shouts "of course?" He feels multiple emotions from excitement to shock to fascination as he watches the TV. This is how most people probably begin their thought process for the scientific method. They experience something that instills a sense of wonder inside of them and they begin a journey to prove or find the truth to that wonder.  Learn: After taking the brain pop video, I scored a 9/10. I got the question wrong about recognizing problems and drawing inferences but did well otherwise. The characters on brain pop emphasized the importance of making observations and establishing variables. Also, accuracy is one of the most important parts of any experiment.  Explore: Real scientists say that the scientific method is actually too simple. The simplified, linear version implies that the method follows an unvarying, linear recipe when in actuality it can ...

First Post: Hello!

Welcome to my Science and Technology blog!  For my first post, I would like to reflect a bit on what I have learned so far in ED2520. One thing that stood out to me the most is how many different online tools there are to create fun and engaging lessons in the classroom. My favorite tool that we saw were flip grids and world cloud. They are both great ways to learn about a student's interests and personality in the beginning of the year but could also be used throughout the school year!  Here is an example of  my flip grid  :)
