The 5 E's

 Engage

The main message of Neil DeGrass Tyson's talk is that science literacy gives you the power to know the validity of someone's words (the truth). The main message is that scientists are knowledgable in other fields than just science. We should be embarrassed that scientists know more about liberal arts and can speak about other subjects such as Shakespeare while English majors could probably not hold a conversation about physics.

Explore

Inquiry-based learned is used to teach students lessons by having them investigate and navigate actual scenarios and experiencing/watching through social scenarios instead of an extremely formal lesson and just reading to memorize facts.

Discovery learning is learning that is done throughout acts of discovery in order to rearrange and transform what is learned in ways that one will be able to move passed the evidence so that they develop a new, additional insight into what is already known.

Explain

The 5E's are a great way to discover new information.

During the "engage" stage, a new task is introduced. This task should be connected to or be able to make connections to past learning of an experience that can be used as an example for the demonstration. The goal is to ignite a feeling of interest and wonder.

Explain is the focus on analysis. The learner is supported throughout the process and encouraged to write down things that they have noticed and what they already know from past experiences. Communication between learners is extremely important because it promotes collaboration and teamwork.

Explore is where learners should take part in activities that allow them to work with materials that will give them an in-depth, hands-on experience.

Elaborate is when it is important to use the knowledge and information that has been gained throughout the process in the prior steps and learners should build on this new-found information. They can make educated guesses, predictions and begin analyzing their info.

Evaluate is where further inquiry should be encouraged and a new cycle can begin that builds upon the previous one. Inquiries may change, causing the process to go in many different directions. Students need to be open to further investigation.
