Science in the News

For my "Science in the News" assignment, I decided to look at a New York Times article called "Climate Change Is Scaring Kids. Here's How to Talk to Them". I thought that this article was perfect to read because we are teaching students at Bishop Dunn about climate change and it may be the first time that they are going to be getting an in-depth look at climate change and its consequences which can be overwhelming.

The main goal of teaching students about climate change is to start positive. Begin by saying what is great about the Earth and develop an appreciation for nature before explaining that it needs to be preserved. It is important to understand the topic before bringing it up to kids. If they get scared and have questions that adults cannot answer, they will just become more frightened.

A great way to explain climate change is to use analogies in order for the students to create a tangible image in their head, explaining that climate change can be "like a blanket covering the Earth" (Holson) they may have a better understanding that this means temps can rise.
